Google AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's conversational, multi-turn search surface. Like AI Overviews it synthesises answers from Google's own index, but it is a distinct engine: for the same query the two cite the same URL only about 14% of the time. Being surfaced in one tells you very little about the other.

How it grounds

AI Mode retrieves from Google Search and often fans a single question into several underlying queries (a “query fan-out”), then stitches the results into a longer conversational answer with inline links. Because it composes from more sub-queries than a standard result page, the set of pages it can cite is broader — and less predictable — than AI Overviews.

Observability

There is no public API for AI Mode, so Lokrix observes it through a SERP provider (Serper or SerpAPI). It is one of the two engines that do not run by default: you configure a search-provider key for the workspace before AI Mode is sampled. Until then it appears as unavailable rather than estimated — Lokrix never presents a guessed result as live. See live vs predictive.

What moves your score

  • Google organic visibility across the query fan-out — ranking for the sub-questions, not just the head term.
  • Quotable, well-structured passages: clear headings and direct answers give the synthesiser extractable material.
  • Statistics, quotations and cited sources on the page — a top content lever across engines (Princeton GEO, KDD 2024).
  • Corroboration from earned media (Reddit, Wikipedia, G2) that reinforces your claims.
