Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews (AIO) is the AI-generated summary Google places above the classic search results. It synthesises its answer from Google's own index and links the sources it draws from, so being cited here means appearing in the box millions of searchers read before any blue link.

How each answer engine grounds its answersSeven answer engines on the left connect to their grounding sources on the right: ChatGPT to the Bing index; Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini to the Google index and Search; Perplexity, Grok and Claude to live web search.ChatGPTGoogle AI OverviewsGoogle AI ModePerplexityGeminiGrok (xAI)ClaudeBing indexGoogle index / SearchLive web search

How it grounds

AIO is built on Google's search index. Its citations skew toward pages already ranking well organically, which means strong Google rank and clear, extractable passages are the foundation. Crucially, AIO and Google AI Mode cite the same URL only about 14% of the time, so Lokrix scores them as two separate engines.

What moves the score

  • Google organic rank — cited pages cluster near the top of Google's own results.
  • Extractable structure — direct answers, headings and concise passages Google can lift into the summary.
  • Quotations, statistics and cited sources — proven to lift AI visibility (about +30–41%).
  • Earned-media corroboration — Wikipedia, Reddit and review sites reinforce trust in your brand as a source.

In Lokrix

AI Overviews has no direct API. Lokrix observes it through a SERP provider (Serper or SerpAPI), so it runs once a search-provider key is configured for the workspace — unlike the five engines that run live by default. Results are still sampled across runs to produce a presence probability with a confidence interval. See sampling & confidence intervals.
